Hey folks,

I'm looking for a metalwork supplier in the US (preferably near Dallas) that can do API500 type work (a basic sheet metal fold plus drill) and also an anodized panel to be stuck on to it's front.

I'm open to any suggestions.

Cheers

Register at mfg.com, supply your engineering drawings in PDF, and put it up for RFQ.

Then let the companies find your RFQ, duke it out and bid on it.

Ovel,

I am very new to this side of productizing... :)
(I'm good at the layout and manufacture of PCB's -- but everything else sucks!)

I am looking for:

- service to do front panels (i.e. drill and silkscreen)
- Enclusure or "L" shaped panels for API-500 style modules. (which I'll then stick a front panel on top, so I can have an anodised front panel and a low cost L plate/enclosure.

What I'm struggling with is the "technical name" for these services.

Can you point me in the right direction?

Cheers

It's called metal fabrication and metal finishing. Sometimes the same company can do both.

If you find a place to do the "L" shaped panels
for API-500 maybe we could do a group buy!!??

I could use some and I'm SHURE others could too
as there are lots of 500 series projects going on!! :thumb:

I am also looking for L shaped panels, I have difficulty to find a metal
work shop that will do this in my country... OK, I will search a little more :)

With the appropriate tools, it would be easy to DIY it, you just need a 1.0 or
1.5mm tick aluminium sheet, you cut and drill it then you fold it at a
90° angle with a metal folding tool to get the L shape, very easy...

I am curious about your requirements. Are there some pictures or drawings of the module bracket you need? I found some pictures of the Brent Averill 312 module here but the bracket doesn't seem right. It only covers about half of the board area. Also, I assume you want an aluminum bracket, not steel as in the Averill case? Will you be supplying the panel art? FPE projects or HPGL?.

I tried to have some 500 style brackets/chassis made at eMachineshop and they didn't make it to my drawings at all. Plasma cut edges were rough and not even straight, and the bend radius was way off, making the front panel off center and unable to fit into a rack.

I used aluminum, but thought that stainless would be stronger.

That being said, I'm in for a group buy.

(I think) bracket should be 120mm wide with a tight bend radius up front... about 145mm from the inner edge of the radius to the back.

PCB mounting holes and front panel holes drilled and threded 6/32

Somthing like this should be very easy to DIY, I think the hardest part is cutting the metal to shape, and drilling mounting holes in the exact same spot. Small sheet metal brakes can be had on eBay for less than $100 IIRC.
