HI Everyone

First of all you are all an inspiration to me as I long to make my own pre's,compressors, etc....that being said...

I am a complete noob. Could you guys recommend on where I should start ie reading, proper things to learn, maybe first projects??

Any help would be great, ive been a lurker on here for a year but have never been able to login, then all of a sudden it works!!

Many,many thanks in advance

Hi and welcome!
Beware that once you start buildin' there ain't no turning back! the pile of 'to-build'-projects will gradually increase.
Good starting-points are the meta-meta's, and good starting projects are the G-SSL, Gyraf Calrec and the Green pre.

Salute!

G'day!

Some tips:

1. Include your country in your profile

2. The meta-meta has a massive amount of info, for noobs through to pro's. You gotta start there and read everything you can.

You'll see the 4th thread listed there is called "General information for newbie DIYers". The info in there is a great place to start. CJ's threads called "electronics 101" directly above it are brilliant too - great basic reading or refresher course.

As a first project, kits are great (as you know everything is - or should be - there) and DI boxes are great too (as they are pretty simple, don't take long, don't cost too much and run off batteries so the risk of electrocution is low(er)). I started with a JLM SimpleDI - which is a DI Box built from a kit, as per Kev's website here:

Have fun!

i have some stuff that is not posted anywhere that i could send to you if you want. p.m. me your e-mail if your interested. im new to electronics also. about a year or so. lots to learn

pm1000 channels are a pretty easy first DIY. lots of info out there, not too expensive, useful, etc..

I don't know the Green pre, but the GSSL and Calrec are hard to debug for beginners.

I would recommend an easy distortion guitar FX as a beginners project:
Only a few parts, runs with 9 V battery and is very usable.
Look at http://www.tonepad.com/. They have tons of guitar FX projects each with specified difficulty.

If you play guitar, then try making a battery powered Fuzz Face as these are almost too simple. You don't even need to put it in a box.

There should be some fundamental electronics tutorials on the net. Start by reading about resistors, voltage, current and Ohm's Law. He's the man.
