very UNtrue. There have been mac viruses for years. The latest one is called OSX. :green:

I have been using Macs constantly since even before they came out (Apple II e), and I use 3 of them on the web every day, and the last time I have ever seen any trace of a virus was back in OS8 from infected floppy discs from a university. There haven't been any viruses against OSX, occasionally the media carries on about one, but it always turns out to be a"concept" virus rather than anything real. The US navy went to Macs because they are so difficult to attack. I have no antivirus software, it is a waste of money.

Mind you, the day will surely come...

At this point, the security of a Mac is not the Mac itself but the Unix base that OSX is derived from..

That being said, there are even competitions where folks try to hack Unix boxes for money.. and win. The time will come.

Well, the fine structure seems to be intact, so right now our local virus specialist is trying to pull off everything which may be of value.

After that it'll probably be a low-level format and complete rebuild... which of course then means going out and re-finding all of the dozens of drivers which have been acquired, installed and forgotten about...

Heck, it's a mess... :evil:

Anyhow, I;'m not able to easily check my home email account for now, unless I log in remotely, so things are a bit tricky at the moment...

I believe the security of the mac is the fact that there are less of them, so they aren't as desirable a target for the hackers. As they become more popular they will become more popular.

So, can you boot into Safe Mode ? (press F8 at boot-up)

I had something (try to) infect me while on photobucket.....all of a sudden a download page for a "free scan" appeared, and started "scanning" (but probably downloading).
I quickly shut-down my 'puter, unplugged the internet cable, booted back up, deleted all my temp files, and ran a full Kaspersky scan.
Two instances of this was found..
malware Exploit.Java.Gimsh.b

I don't know if this was from the photobucket event, but they were deleted.
I also noticed earlier that day, my homepage (normally "google.com" , was "google5.com/...redirect", and my internet was running slow.
But all is back to normal now.
Advice on the net says to update Java runtime to the current version.

Kaspersky anti-virus has a free (full version) trial, fwiw....

I use Mac OSX or Unix exclusively. I don't know how to use micropork products because Unix was the first OS I learned. Virus vulnerability aside, Micro$soft products have one big problem. They don't work.

You can mount the XP NTFS file system disk in a Linux machine and copy over the files you need. Ask a geek to help, you don't need to shell out big bling to data recovery joints.
