After searching the forum, I found a lot of full-featured monitor controller discussions, but nothing about a simple one-knob passive attenuator.

Something like this shouldn't be too hard right?

If someone could point me to some info on something like this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Not much to do. A usually terribly expensive rotary and a bunch of resistors. Done.

I did one with a cheap switch and some signal relays to switch in combinations of 1dB, 2dB, 4dB and 8dB pads (giving 0dB to 15dB attenuation).

Various nice & low BOM-cost circuits around here, do a search.
NYD posted a fine & coarse 600 Ohm passive attenuator & maybe the circuit from I forgot his username (Mr Hinson his real name IIRIC) is still up.

Whoa, you had to add a power supply for the monitoring-stuff of a passive attenuator ?  :thumb:
i got a few four deck elma switches so im building follow attenuator for my new monitor controller... http://www.goldpt.com/schm_ser.html
what are the resistor values if i want 1.0db steps =?
This one is not balanced and not constant impedance. It's just a simple resistor divider.

Here's a calculator to find out the steps and resitors:

I have made a passive attenuator for monitoring using elma 24pos. switch, simple but a lot of work...

You'll find a lot of info with google.

No that was for the JLM vu meter buffers

Yep, we both meant the same, ehh, monitoring by eye, not the monitoring by ear. The audio-path between in & out is all passive, right ?
Yes completely passive
Note I didn't even mention the effective use of rackspace

I like it :thumb:
