does anyone have a really good shcematic for a clipping curcuit for a mic pre. i'd like to have that option so when you overload the mic pre a light comes on and you know to make adjustments.

You may have one in a minute or so, do a search here. There are various (threads about) one LED clip indicators.

There's also an easy one on page 2 of this Rane pdf. It's in the upper right corner.

It's designed for a bi-color LED. I'm using several of them in a line mixer and they do the job. Play with the values of R34, R38, and R41 to alter the response. Changing the value of R39 alters the LED "flicker."

The rane circuit looks full wave to me as it seems to be able to detect both positive and negative peaks, or maybe I miss something ?
(negative peaks go through OL2 and positive peaks go through OL1 I believe...
or the contrary, the Z2A opamp confuses me :p)

The schematic for Dan's Great River psu board has an i.c. comparator
to catch both the pos & neg waveforms , works well , starts to glow as it approachs clipping
