I'm sorry but this is going to seem a silly question to most here I'm sure.

I am building a passive summing mixer and using heavy gauge copper wire for this but am wondering how to connect to the copper wire as soldering doesn't seem to work..

I use the copper house wire for ground buss and it seems to work fine
may have to heat the spot up a little more than you're used to

In addition to the good advice you've already gotten...

Copper is an excellent heat conductor, so you'll be fighting its natural heatsinking. Use a chisel tip or at least one with a flat. Maximize the contact area between the tip and the buss wire for fast heating.
