am looking to pickup a decent frequency counter for doing tape machine alignment.

any advantage to buying a standalone unit? or will a DMM that has one work fine for this? I have been considering buying a nice meter like a Fluke 179 and if the frequency counter in it is sufficient, that would be great.

anyone have suggestions/recommendations?

Not sure what frequency you need to check but my Studer is 150k which is probably higher than most DMMs will read. I picked a counter up off of eBay for about $50. The nice thing is that for tape machines you don't need the fancy counters that tend to sell for more $$. Mine is a Simpson but there are a lot of little ones that are similar and will do the job.

Older HP counters are excellent and can be had for very cheap off ebay.
I paid for my 5334b about $50. Goes up to 500MHz, too lazy to count how many digits it has.
Most likely an overkill, but what's the heck--its cheap.
Something like 5314a or 5316a takes much less space on the bench.
