Hello all,

Long time lurker here, and electronics newb (at best).

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time.

Is anyone on top of the PSU issue yet? What could potentially work? JLM stuff?

Am I missing something? This looks like a project we (as a community) could DIY for alot less than 500$.....A rack case, a pcb, some edge connectors and xlr's right? Should be about 250$?

Hey Ray,

You volunteering to pick it up as a project for the DIY community :thumb:

There has been chatter on this for along time, no results yet so this may be the best offering until someone here picks up the project.

There was some talk , not enough agreement i think
need someone with good mechanical planning abilities to plan it
so it fits & works as it should . with good metal work biz contacts
[ i have to measure three times cut twice and still have to fix it ! ]

this one seems basic but more fool proof
11 space leave the power supply off then you decide individually
what you want [ if you can jam it in 1 space then go for it ]

other than the planning [ and effort to get it off the ground ]
i don't see the 500.00 in this , but it is cheaper than anything else
anybody is offering so ............. they stepped up

There has been at least one successful d.i.y. here with the vactrol racks
anyone got metalwork savy ? pcb designing experience ?
 
I would be willing to do the backplane if someone else wants to do the metalwork....

I thought that it would be a better idea to use 18 way connectors fitted with the same alignment as a standard 15 way..... ie.. pin 1 is in the same position so that the extra 3 pins are at the bottom of the module.... fit a blanking pin into position 16.... then pins 17&18 can be used as an alternative power supply option....

Then you can fit a standard module as normal..... or if you want to design a module with alternative power voltages then all you need is a module with an extra bit at the lower end of the connector which you can use for the power....

I have no interest in a 500 series rack...maybe in a few years. I have enough outboard (thanks to this forum!!) to last me for a while...I just hate seeing something that seems like it costs too much...I don't even know the dimensions of the 500 series cards and panels but they can't be that odd....You guys are DIY geniuses :thumb: , :green: ..too early on my part of the globe for :guinness:

Seems a good idea slenderchap
as long as normal modules will be unaffected ,
[ nobody else has this idea ? ]
are there not common unused pins on the normal 500 standard ?
can this be compatable with the 500 series power cable ?
For a Neve 24v only need one more pin with common ground ,
unless your idea was to have another +/- v

Soon , as i have several 500 series projects i WILL need one
, been holding off for the right deal

anyone have the 5 pin connector pinout ?

O.k. Slender stepsup for the p.c.b. , anyone got good metalwork contacts?

Isn't that what this place is about? Building quality gear in a affordable manner? :roll:
Nobody seems to be so concerned for the Putnam brothers eating habits that we stopped building 1176's or LA2a's...My thought was with all the talent here it could be done for you guys more affordably. I have NO interest in this..I will go back to being a quiet lurker...

In fact i need it
and i don't mind some money going closer to home
that it ain't a charity here for people's time either .

market dictates though , if people think it's a good price
[ best one currently ] they'll make some sales .
a business has to make a profit to stay a business
and it doesn't seem to be chinese .

anyone need something from Canada i can get ya ?

I can deal with the metalwork but I will need the dimensions of an API rack. It can be e-mailed to me at info at robotica dot co dot uk.

I really like Colins idea for the extra pins on the edge card.

Better than the small IDC or jumper solutions discussed recently.

I'd be all for it. +/-28V would be great.

10-space with internal PSU would also be great.

Me too... on both those issues.

Audiox said he had almost complete mechanical drawings.. I have a very good contact for custom metal work in Chicago. I would prefer to do it there, or at least to get a quote from an American firm. It's a much better deal in dollars.....

I agree with Tom , and I'm stilll interested in a rack !(only internal psu)
