In the 6205, the shield is on the same lead as the cathode (leads 2 and 8). Grid 3 is on a separate line, but for the Royer SDC schematic, should still be wired the same as the 5840, right? Is it OK that the shield on lead 2 is wired with the cathode and grid 3 in the 6205?

Here are the pin outs:

In 6205,
tube lead 1 (grid 1) = capsule
tube lead 2, 4, 8 (cathode, shield, and grid 3) = pin 1 on XLR
tube lead 3 (heater) = pin 4 on XLR
tube lead 5, 7 (plate and grid 2 / B+) = pin 2 on XLR
tube lead 6 (heater) = pin 5 on XLR

In 5840,
tube lead 1 (grid 1) = capsule
tube lead 2, 4, 8 (cathode and grid 3) = pin 1 on XLR
tube lead 3 (heater) = pin 4 on XLR
tube lead 5, 7 (plate and grid 2 / B+) = pin 2 on XLR
tube lead 6 (heater) = pin 5 on XLR

Thanks,

Can't remeber the pin assignments for the Royer mod but, yes, they are wired the same. With the 5840 you can snip some of the leads right off because they are joined up internally, but with the 6205 you need to connect them all.

I just built a nice mic with a 6205, btw. They sound just fine.

Caution: pin 4 is the suppressor grid ONLY in the 6205. That's the only difference between the 6205 and the 5840.
