Ah, so it is like my idea of a binary-type thing. (1+2+4+8, etc)
Not yours and neither mine...it is 1960' era circuit....

My only concern with that method is that with maximum attenuation, your audio is travelling through ALL resistors. Metal film or not, this is still adding noise.
(It's just another reason I like using my RME for level control)


Ahem...RME has a good clock, but cr*p audio path.
Don't tell me you loosing less resolution on RME than with 150 metal film resistors.

Take a real situation. You never get to max. att.
And...at max. att ear can't hear most details.
Fletcher-Munson, 84 db, etc.
Then, in real life, sound passes thru 2-4 series and 2-4 parallel resistors...
At this point of attenuator, impedance is good enough (arround 1.5-2k)
if Rl and Rin are 5k. I don't see any reason why potentiometer in RME is better...
And even not speaking about loose algorhytm of digital attenuation....
(if we go deep into audiofoollery, pot is carbon cracked=noisy 10 times more
than followed by 4558 or so thing with some SMD low volt. ceramic caps
in feedback; from other side, conductive plastic claimed by audiofools as BAD;
digital attenuation claimed bad as well; if we using Elma based DACT,
there's 7-15 resistors from signal side and 15-7 from ground)....

RELAYS and MF IMHO best and cleanest real life possible solution.

From the other side......many people using console's controll room (audiofeel's nightmare)
and some doing great mixes even on Mackie.

BTW, resistors itselves are not adding noise which more then noise of power amp...
(if att. impedance calculated right)....
I never had a patience to calculate a noise figure added by MF resistors to
power amp with 25-30 db of gain....

being designer of a littlepartoflittlepart than get back to audio :)

I use Cranesong Hedd192 as monitor DAC and RME is operating digitally. The Cranesong feeds my ATC T16s directly, via 2 mercury relays. (per phase, per channel) Contact resistance is approx 0.002 ohms.
I like it :)
 
Dax, if you happy with sound and feel covinient-this is most important.
MUSIC is what minds, other stuff is tech only.
Anyway, I don't like digital attenuation :)
 
I am also very much interested in this.  It's something I've needed for a while and haven't got round to tackling on my own.
 
I have one of the Igor's semi complex versions of the Monitor Controller
and I can say it is really great. You don't need anything else if you go
with this KITs.

BTW Igor, I sent you an email about the new options regarding the plexi plates for this project  ;)
