I have a run of the mill anti static mat, but it's slightly too large for my desk. Can these be cut? Are they simply made with a conductive layer in the middle?

They're usually made of fairly inflexible conductive plastic (same kinda stuff you get in some types of shielded cable, only thicker), so as long as you don't cut the bit off with the earthing stud on, it should be fine.... (I hope, otherwise my name will be more mud than I'm used to)

We use this stuff at work, comes on a roll, cut it to size with a razor. I don't know how conductive it is, checked with an ohmmeter it's highly resistive. I like to work on powered gear right on it. But it is connected to ground, you can even clip an aligator lead to the edge if there's no button. They keep throwing out rolls of the used bits, if anyone's interested, I grabbed a few.
