Welcome! :) This is my old, original thread that was started in the Black Market. With the evolution of our great forum here, I wanted this one moved to the new White Market to give me a space to inform everyone of the many changes that occur at my store. Everything has been left intact for a future reference. Jeff

Hey All,

This has been a long, long time in the works. Although I am not quite ready to launch yet...I am nearing the finish line. I figure it's close enough to let the cat out of the bag, as they say.

Here's what we will have going.

Exclusive place to buy the following raw components:

->Ed Anderson’s well-known version of the AP2623-1 transformer. We call it the EA2623-1 ;) Many of you know the story behind it and have purchased them already for 525 builds and such. They should always be in stock. Pricing will $25 each, with breaks down to $20, depending upon qty. Remember, these were the balancing transformers used on the vintage desk channels, not the 2503. We will be stocking a channel frame mount for these, to give you more mounting options.

->Speaking of the 2503, I mean EA2503. Ed is testing and completing R&D now. Pricing has yet to be finalized, but will be complete in a few days. Like his work with the 2623, these will be very hard to beat when it comes to emulation of the vintage AP2503. Pricing will be kept as low as possible and will also feature quantity discounts.

->Our EA2623-4 transformers are the PCB mount version of the 2623-1, and electronically identical. These were used on the vintage ACA’s in the old desks. Proto’s have been made and are being tested now as well.

->As far as input transformers…after some prodding, a proto EA2622 is in development. We will keep you up to date with Ed’s progress on these too. Like the others, they will be hard to top in duplicating the vintage AP2622 qualities. Pricing TBD.

->Next, are finely crafted, black anodized, solid aluminum control knobs. You know the ones! NOT natural…but black. These all have a machined white index line on the top and the side. We will be stocking a few sizes in large quantities. We will have to see what is most in demand. We will have many different sizes and colors of the PSA colored aluminum inserts in stock too.

I have the first batch of knobs in hand. I am completing the colored insert stock in the next few days. This has been an extremely long and difficult process. Many, many months. I have shared my frustrations with a few of you in private. I do have to say, it was worth the work. They look great! We will have 6 different configurations to start with. Multiple sizes, some with the pointer and some plain. Very bad-ass in black!

BTW, I have not and do not plan on ordering the knobs in the natural aluminum. I will have the originals from my desk for sale on a first come, first serve basis. I am modifying and refurbishing with a new paint scheme now. I will have the only beige, vintage API 3232 with all black knobs in existence.

Keep an eye on this thread. I will update it when I’m ready to launch.

Please don’t post any reserve quantities here. ALL transactions will be completed at the store. It’s powered by osCommerce with a big thanks to Mike from Hairball Audio for tips, inspiration and a general “you can do it too” attitude!

Cheers, Jeff

oscommerce/zencart is fantastic and really easy to configure and modify with little no no coding knowledge and some reading.

Best of luck.

Yes it is fairly straightforward. I'm pretty good with VBA, which is totally different but helps understanding the coding concepts in general. It's cool that all the cart software is open and free. That's a great community too.

I have quite a few osC "Add-On contributions" running. Some were super easy...some were pretty complex!

Lots of fun either way.

Thanks for the wishes, Jeff

yeah, I found some easy, and some hard. I added a "stock by attribute" mod recently, and it involved manually editing a couple php files, that was interesting.

The one issue I have is that I have parts I sell individually, but also as part of a kit.  This makes it hard to manage my inventory in the software.

If someone buys a "Large Knob" it'll subtract 1 knob from my stock...but if some one buys a "Kit" it subtracts nothing.  It'd be cool if when someone buys a Kit it subtracts 2 from the Large Knobs, 1 from the attenuators and so on....

Gotta be a way to do this.

Mike

holy!
jeff, i'm very excited to know that you will be offering these for ed.
you better have a HUGE stock of knobs in whatever color.
hmmm, no need for natural alum color.  black is fine and can be modified anyway. ;)
thank you to both you and ed!!
this is an exciting week in the BM!

Yeah, designate x amount to kits and x amount to individuals...but yes, there's definitely a way to have a kit subtract parts from other inventory counts.

hey mike,
you could just package the kits together and have whatever amount entered into your inventory control system and just put the total amount of knobs of each kind in the system and if someone wants only a knob (when only kits are left) then they have the choice of buying the kit or waiting until your stock is replenished.  old school inventory management eh.  (i know...i'm dumb). :D

Better than my current method of opening the box and counting them every once and a while!  :)

I agree PTown...I'm sure there is an add-on for this somewhere....need to do a little searching.

Mike

Yeh Mike, there has to be way. I search and hang out at the osC forums waaaayyy to much lately.

As usuall, back-up, back-up and oh yeah BACK-UP your files before installing this mod.  ;D

I have the hide all the BIN and Add to Cart buttons if stock is zero. Was no biggy.

USPS shipping plus the insurance mod was easy. The hardest part is selecting which mod/version to use. Thanks again Mike for your pointers.

The biggest one I did was the Quantities Discount Mod. It required mucho SQL work on the database, like 15 PHP files to mod plus quite a few to add. Major mods too, not just a line or 2. It worked like a dream right away though. Took me a few hours on a Sunday, but worth it. I just take my time and use some good free software to double-check myself before committing.

The biggest pain is the PayPal integration and IPN. I think their system is a bit shaky-jake. I have to check my admin orders and PayPal, to make sure all is cool. I get the "Pending" note but I simply can't get a "Verified" IPN back from them. Oh well. It can't all be easy.

that's odd, i didn't have to do any paypal setup at all other than putting in our e-mail address. Transaction id goes automatically to the invoice...

i want to take a moment to thank both jeff and mike for taking over the sales side of my custom transformer runs for the forum.  without them, there is no way that i would be able to offer as many different reproductions.

honestly i was surprised at how many diy-ers wanted 2623s, but that is mostly a credit to peter's 525 kit.  that experience was what got me thinking that there was enough demand and might be a way to do more for the forum.  as jeff mentioned, he has 2623-1s from me already...  2503s are on the way, with 2623-4 (pcb mount), and 2622s not too far behind.  some forum members may remember the run of 2622s i did in early 2007, these will be the same, but after not making any for two years, i need to test everything out before offering them for sale through jeff.

the reproduction transformers that jeff has are as close as i could get to the originals with modern materials.  none of them are stock parts that were "close enough" to substitute, and all of them required several rounds of samples and testing on my AP system one.  i have worked closely with several winders to be able to offer these parts.  i should also note that while the dissections and data provided on this forum by cj were very helpful, there are a lot of details that can only be nailed with some back and forth with the guys who actually do the winding.  all of the other, similar transformers offered by other manufacturers are good transformers (maybe a little too "good" in some cases), but i believe i have gotten closer to the performance of the originals.

i'll post some photos soon, and hopefully i'll be shipping to jeff next week.

ed

ps- i am not "taking requests" for more transformers designs.  i do have more in the works, but the more people bug me the longer it will take to get them ready for sale.  if anyone wants 50+ qtys of a custom design, i will be happy to work with them, but i am not interested in one-offs.

hi ed,
thank you for teaming up with jeff and offering all these goodies.  yummy. :)

i was one of the lucky few who bought your 2622 type input transformers and have them in a 312 circuit.  i like the sound of them over the cinemag CM75101 i had in another 312 circuit.  and compares very favorably to the JT-110K in another 312 circuit i have but your 2622 has more warm mid-range goodness (i know all subjective).

lets just say they are great in a 312 circuit!
cheers and thanks for all you do!

Maybe ZenCart is an easier mate with PayPal? I'm using PayPal Website Payments Standard. I don't use SSL at the site so all CC and payment stuff takes place on PayPal's secure servers. I felt it was better in the long run. osC has code where the user has to return to a specified page so stock updates occur correctly and so on. I know Mike's site is SSL encrypted. Do you take CC payments on your server or direct all that to PayPal only?

Enough nerd talk...I got a little sip of some good stuff to see what you all think.

First is a brand new, vintage style, dual-concentric knob set. The bottom knob is a pointer style, .5” small diameter with a .25” thru hole. Top knob is a plain style, .375” small diameter with a .125” mounting hole. No insert shown, they will be sold separately and shipped loose. Top knob fits down inside the milling on the bottom knob, classic design just like a vintage 550 (no “a”).

Next is a new, plain, .625” small diameter with an aqua insert. The inserts are pretty limited colors for the larger knobs. I love the aqua though.

OK. Back to work…Jeff
