I'm thinking of adding a couple of aux sends through an insert in one of the channels of a mixer.  Would it be as easy as running a straight through line from the input to the output of the insert with two splits on the line that each go to a 10K pot, with each pot going to a separate transformer output to the input for the effects unit.  Returns would just be handled on separate input channels.

It'd be much better if you built an active circuit to buffer the aux sends. Actually, you could use a small mixer for this purpose. The inputs to the small mixer could be wired up to bridge the inserts of the main mixer.
