Cool. You do that. I'll do that. Everybody do that. We can have 999 forums with one person in each, an ideal world. No disagreements, no sharing, no learning.....

....in case anybody misses my point: I'm kidding. Splitting-up is stupid.

Objections to commercial posts are stupid. People who need to sell things to feed the kids often know the MOST about how it all works. (More than some folks who get a bug up their butt when someone says "$".) My only "objection" is that when discussing products on someone else's forum, profiteers should share the wealth. But anybody smaller than Neumann et al can share wealth as knowledge/information instead of cash. (Yes, knowledge IS valuable.)

cayocosta,
I think it's you that needs to show some respect. Steve was very respectful in asking a question. You gave your answer. You gave your reason. Done. I suggest you go back and read Steves question-he asked about starting a general la2a thread.

yes Paul I do agree and I do know what I said and how some might take that comment. I did chose my words carefully and was provocative to a degree.

Every since the LAB's birth I have had much email and encouragement and offers to mod a forum. This is an open thread I can't be more open than I am.
I still get email from people too timid to post questions here and some of these people feel more nervous here than at Tech Talk.

There are many Friends of Group DIY and some of them are in fact in this business to make a profit.
BUT I have encouraged them to post and supply info and resources to the DIY community.
Now that some of them are actively interested I will support them to the full.
Even so there is a line that shouldn't be crossed and that line may well be continuously moving but it is healthy to discuss.

An open forum is just that .... open.

Group DIY is now a dot com and a dot org and a dot net.
The name has grown well beyond my original intention. The group now feels it has ownership of the name. That's fine and if I don't fit that's fine too. I will never deliberately do anything to compromise what it has become. It has to decide it's own direction and run it's own growth.

The net is a free world and expect another DIY forum. DIYer's have the right to choice and some choice is worthwhile. Too much choice could be detrimental to the overall ideal that the early Tech Talkers had. Some of those early Tech Talkers have been missing for a while. They may be looking for a more gentle choice.
If the LAB has a question about an LA2 project no matter the source ... and if I have something to offer, I'll post.

I'll leave this discussion now as I think people know where I stand ... perhaps the Brewery is the place for this.

it's all good

Joel,

Steve asked for an la2a thread that would be cleared to also serve his customers - he mentions intending to send them to it.

This is not the same thing as a general la2a thread.

Furthermore, he also makes reference to recent 'turmoil' regarding a 'similar situation.'

The 'similar situation' he is referring to is the another for-profit vs. Lab controversy that boiled over a little while back - it got pretty rough.

Again, a general la2a thread has - at face value - no concern with prior controversy.

Honestly, I really don't care what we do here, profit or not, so long as it's fair and it applies to everyone. That's all I've ever argued for. Make it official and give it a place to live. So far there has been no comprehensive solution proposed. Maybe one will come out of this discussion and we can finally put an end this recurring nightmare.

Hi Group,

I can't see any problem in a DIY-LA2A thread here, even though the main part of the questions will come from commercial-kit-builders.

The only possible problem I can see is if questions from other - non-buying - DIY'ers were excluded from the thread. But that wouldn't make sense anyway, as this forum is for sharing information.

And I agree completely with PRR - splitting up is stupid!

This forum is about DIY, and the LA2A is DIY. Yes, it's not non-commercial, but it's pretty close. Noone will keep you from sourcing your parts elsewhere, and all the info is available. Knowing the seller of the "kit", I think we can safely assume that he won't favorize his "own" customers in the sense of not answering anyone else's questions. The commercialism in this project only relates to easy availability, not to the information level that is the relevant part for real DIY'ers.

So my opinion is - simply go ahead and make this thread..!

And if it goes commercially astray, we will surely let you know..
