Ok, I know I'm gonna feel dumb when I get an answer, but.....

I've got an SSL on the bench, I'm feeding the left channel a sine wave from an HP200 ( unbalanced), and the output of the left channel is hooked up to a mixer(balanced).

I hear the output, it varies as I move the gain control, I can hear it compressing, but when I hookup my scope to the hot pin (with it still connected to the mixer), I can't see it. I can see it on the input, but not on output.

How do it know?

I believe you mean the stereo compressor..

What about on the inverting output? Maybe you have a halfway working output balancing stage? Or maybe your mixer is not really balanced after all?

I'll move this under the SSL compressor troubleshooting thread, as it may be related to troubleshooting the unit.
