Not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this question, but I'm curious how one measures the noise floor on relatively quiet gear. I'm teaching a class on maintenence and calibration and have been hitting specifications and measurements pretty hard in theory. But when it came to actually measuring the floor to determine SNR, dynamic range, etc. the noise floor as voltage is too low to pick up on any (even a very decent) multimeter.

Doing some quick calculations show that a lot of typical values for noise floors are in the microvolt range. So how might I measure this floor?

If you are wanting to test the noise floor of audio equipment, you might consider
a good quality AD/DA converter interface and software spectrum analyser.
