I have an extra GSSL board, how about leaving out all the control bits, and wiring a pot from +DC to the control voltage pins on the audio VCAs.... wouldn't this make a near perfectly tracking stereo volume knob? A switch for input select and some relays for 2 outputs and mute & good 'ol Bobs yer uncle?

Thats a good idea...but you still have to left in board all the de-balancing circuit and balancing stuff...
take a look at THAT design sheets...http://www.thatcorp.com/datashts/dn116.pdf

That is nice (no pun intended) and with a 1200 on the front end and a 1646 on the back yer done...but I do have the GSSL board to use, and it has all the balancing / debalancing on it (55 series chips are much cheaper than the THAT chips, as well)
I like the notes about thermo coupling the VCAs
