Can anyone recommend a simple point to point project?
« on: August 25, 2009, 09:21:08 AM »
Hey all,
I just finished up a clone of the zvex wooly mammoth, I know this is not exactly ascending to DIY Mount Olympus, but it was exciting to me to build something straight from a schematic without a PCB or anything.

I'd really love to do some more simple point to point projects, can any one recommend anything?

I don't need anymore fuzz pedals or overdrives or anything like that but I'm not quite ready for anything on the scale of a la2a or ba6a.

THANKS!

Some simple one-channel one-tube preamp. Build it on a turret board. I would recommend the NYD one bottle. It's well documented and 12VA7 tubes are still cheaply available. It isn't too fussy on what input transformer you use and doesn't need output transformer at all.

I would suggest NYD One Bottle too. If you want something more fancy you could build RCA BC-3C which have gain pot and original transformers are probably still available. Our member EMRR was selling them:

Enjoy!

How about a 5E3 tweed deluxe. Low parts count and one of the best sounding amps ever.

Denyle took the words right out of my mouth. A simple single-ended Champ-class tube guitar amp is a great intermediate-level project. Just don't follow the diagram exactly, to the point of making an electrocution box -- use a grounded power cord!

Thanks so much for the ideas, as always, more cool projects than I could get to within a reasonable life expectancy.

I don't have a Fender flavored amp so something like that might work out nicely... but those RCA jawns look way fine.
