They rule :grin:

I'd like to make a meter. I have two EAM86. They're from an ol' B&O taperecorder. Before I took that apart I did see them in action. Very nice to look at :grin:

I do have a schematic, but it doens't really make any sense.

Anyone else done anything with magic eyes? Justin :cool: ?

See this;

Datasheet;

Do I just fired it up with 200V and apply a signal to the grid, oder was?

Very kooool :grin:

Can you help me hook up the EAM86s? Can I just follow the schematic in the Telefunken datasheet? The schematic I got doesn't quite look the same :?

Yes, thank you very much!

So, there's nuffin' more to it than applying the signal at the grid?

I saw a page once, I think Justin gave the link when some asked 'bout his avatar, with many different kinds of magic eyes. They look so damn kool, that I'll bet you could sell a piece of gear just by the look.. why aren't they more widely used? I know they're rare though...

Here is a nice magic eye page

Aah... Magic eyes :thumb:

A quick search of my computer revealed these links:

Jukka Tolonen?s design:

Very cool German site (check for links to schems):

Marc Schutte?s stereo indicator:

Ake?s tubedata (scroll down to eye link, amazing valve site! The same site as Bo's link I think)

Hopefully I should have a magic-eye device to show the board in the next few weeks.

Note to forum: However itchy you get, don't rub your eye-brows after machining alloy, I have the dermatitis to prove it :roll:

Enjoy the weekend!

edit: I got my avatar back to celebrate the occasion :wink:

Yea!

Sounds great- I've got a few waiting for a suitable project myself. Looking forward to seeing that!

sismofyt,

Let us know which design you go with :thumb:

Have a good (DIY!) weekend!

That looks like a neat PCB and with that M3-trick it looks like
it could accomodate elephant-feet sockets (like for EM1, EM4) as well.

Since the EM4 is top-view, mounting this PCB vertically ('landscape',
longest side up) would be most convenient.
So I'm wondering what the size of this PCB is. Would the height of the shortest side of the PCB fit a 2HE rack enclosure ?

Thanks,

Peter

Hmm, this is interesting. Look what Steve says about that one;

"A line stage usually needs to have a gain of only about 10. For those who like "colorful" amps, you can build your line stage from a 1629 Magic Eye Tube. These have relatively low distortion, combined with a stage gain of 15 and an output resistance of about 5k ohms. The distortion characteristics are shown here and a simple schematic using the 1629 as a line amp is also provided. Interestingly enough, these tubes have distortion that is almost entirely 2nd order."

Have to try that :green:
