can someone suggest a good resource for learning how to make simple oscillator, filter, vca's etc. I'm interested in making a small semi modular synth but am at a loss where to start. I don't really want to spend a lot of money or use other peoples designs, just simple things that can be developed in the future. Can anyone suggest any essential reading please.

Well, did you google:  analog synth DIY  ??

I just did, and there are A LOT of sites dedicated to building analog synths.

This one has quite some interesting resources:  http://www.squidoo.com/buildASynth

Hello,

I have begun a website that might assist you.  It is:

http://buildasynth.josephfosco.com.

I've just started so there are only a few articles right now.  As the name implies, I am writing about building a synthesizer.  Since the website is new, the articles are quite basic right now.  they will get more involved as time goes on.

If you look at the website, let me know what you think, and what you would like to see.

Best wishes,
Joseph Fosco

If you are interested in synthesizer DIY you need to check out this resource. Electronotes started out in the '70s as a resource for building analog voltage controlled synths. Some of the earliest material is not on-line, containing the best circuits but there are some publications you can get that contain the newsletter editions. If you browse through the free stuff, a couple of the items in there have a few of the basic articles included as appendicies. There is one particularly good article on exponential converters that covers the waterfront.

Bernie is also covering digital synthesis in the newer newsletters that are available on-line. These are mainly theory right now but I am interested in converting some of this information to hardware (possibly using DSPs or gate arrays). He has articles covering digital sinewave oscillators and digital filters.
