this is the second time i have seen rusty lams due to moisture from the white tape.

intentional? remember rupert and his rusty neve lams? all they have to do is dry it out in an oven, wtf?
iqkdnl.jpg

that is the terminal tape rivet thingy  sticking up edgewise, exposing the sec. lead routing,

you have to really loosen up the tape with heat, otherwise snappy gator, dissection over, start again
mn0nxl.jpg

count these
54g7ba.jpg

i am not a number, i am a free man!  (woman, probably) i want off the villaige! ok, outtermost sec. 17t>
14mh1rm.jpg

26 layers just like this, these "pies", wound at the same time, then spliced  in series,  >
1z2em1j.jpg

I see!    'Neve' grade lam rust.

"The sound is in the unevenly stacked oxide"

I knew there had to be something that makes these so sought after.

Great info CJ. Though it is bought with much sorrow for those concerned.

Thanks

well, if you want to see a tweak nobody knows about, and this trick really works, then observe closely:

there is a 7 turn layer of "foldback winding visible in this pic. as opposed to back and forth, capice?

Left to Right only, the back across quickly, to start another L to R layer,

what does this do, anybody?

2llobkn.jpg

plenty of air in thes sec layers, sometimes,
2zjevcx.jpg

disk micrometer needed to measure the insl between layers, probably 0.0007"  or close,

Mike at Magnequest gets his made from virgin pulp trees in Germany, less toxic crap to eat wire,

23maebq.jpg

same partial layer on the outer sec, coil B,

zsjxah.jpg

in order to have both windings start from the left side, somebody has to cross over,

so, did they start the counter before the extra 7 turns or after? either way, one winding is off a bit,
2vl7ko2.jpg

ok,  bottom of the barrel in the image dept, 3 rejects left, 1 leftover, 1 focus, 1 boring pri>

pri side,
i just realized i'm an idiot, all this time, i should have just flagged the  leads with yellow tape!  lot easier
wrm2i9.jpg

not as much color as the peerless factory, but i did find some green tape in between pri taps,

notice no foldback technique, nor twin pies used for the low turns, low leakage  C primary windings,

11uf488.jpg

and some orange paper, just in time for Halloween,
zj86f6.jpg

i will get the new data sheet filled out asap,

it will say 900 turns pri and 9000 turns sec, no wires were broken, so those are good numbers.

bye kids!

Don't you just love this guy!  :)
He speaks a language all his own! ;D

But its wonderful to our British Ears. ;)
Your info down the years has been invaluable.
One nomination for Nobel service to the transformer attached
Well done CJ
best

Hey CJ...
I just got a "BLACK" can HA-100X.
What's the difference's from the Black to Gray? Good or bad?

If you read all of CJ's UTC dissections, you see he mentions the black having a hair less inductance.  The really early sand cast black are preferred by the real vintage audio pervs.  The '70's TRW/UTC are rumored to kinda suck, like they cut every corner possible.  I have only ever seen one OPT/UTC, which was an early '90's A-10.  It seemed fine.

Cool, Thanks Doug!

... I'm wondering whether to sell it or keep it for my next LA2A build?
Does anyone know what they're worth... the BLACK HA-100X that is?
Obviously they can get ridiculous on ebay.

Thanks,
K

the new school version is not the same
CJ, what the physical dims of the bobbins & lams?

According to this picture:

1z5ohv8.jpg

in relation to the finger (more or less known size  8)) it looks like 375UI lams. I think that's the size you used in U195, correct?

Best, M

According to this picture, looks more like 31UI  ;)
