I'm looking at getting a cheap shotgun mic to play around with.

CHEAP being the main word here.. >150$

Anyone use the MXL shotgun mics?  They seem decently built, probably easily modded I suppose.

Other suggestions are welcome too.

Never used the mxl's but I have a pair of the apex shotgun mics.  they work as well as any other shotgun mic I have heard  but then again I only will use them on a drum kit. Not too shabby

which model, the 175?

I looked at it's pattern plot and it was more cardioid than polar.

I kinda want to try a shotgun as an overhead snare mic.

If you have an AKG 451 (not B) series mic body, you can often find their CK9 shotgun capsule on eBay for about $150.  Not my favorite shotgun, but something to play with.

Never heard the MXL shotguns, but the ones from Rode are pretty good sounding and very low noise. They also have a model that can be battery powered, which can be handy.
