Can anyone recommend a fume extraction setup?

I currently have this.

But it SUCKS Big Time. i.e. It doesn't suck fumes unless the fan is right near, i.e. an inch or two away from the workpiece. It's also noisy. I don't mind the noise if it works good. But it's cheap at less than $30.

Anything usable in the less than $400 budget?

What do you guys use?

PS: Can't open windows. My desk is not near a window, and the whole house has A/C.

Thanks!

I have one of those too, I ended up taking the carbon filter out of it to get a better laminar flow. I have a window though...

I haven't seen anything under 500 bucks for a commercial unit, and I have the feeling those lower-priced extractors would be lacking in performance...

I am thinking of lashing up a DIY hood out of some Lexan sheet from the Depot (maybe big enough for a flourecent work light). I'd pipe the fumes out with some flex duct down to a plywood filter box behind my bench. Box would have a resiliant-mounted blower and some filters inside, maybe something like this:

and a couple of these:

Should be pretty quick/cheap to slap together and try.

What'd ya think?...

You might try a old range hood. When I replaced my appliances craigslist was full of them for free or close to it. They move a lot of air  and can be ducted outside or to  a filter

Good idea Turnip, that might work for me! I saw a hood up in my uncle's shed last week,  I'm gonna grab it and give it a try.

Thanks!

I tried to assemble SMD components first time in my life in a local university lab where my friend worked (it was a long time ago when this happened). In that work station there was also fume extraction system installed, so i decided to use it to protect my lungs. When I turned the system on, it immediately sucked all the SMD components that I had carefully arranged to the margin of the working area. So be carefull if you are working with SMD...
