Back to the main PCBs.
Capacitors

First solder C'13 the 10uF tantalum, on the upper left of the PCB;
Always pay attention on the polarity. Double check esp. the tantalum

I think the BOM is detailed enough regarding capacitor specifications. Please use good brands.

some notations of capacitors need special attention :
C4 in bom = C4" / C4 on pcb
C17 in bom = C17' / C17 on pcb
C'4, C6' not in BOM = 80 uF
C7, C12 in bom and pcb: 33m = 33uF
Transistors

I've built 5 off these already, no problems... this isn't paint by numbers, you need to put in some effort  :-\

Party pooper.  Please don't spoil the fun or come down with a moral attitude.   ;)  Apologies if I misinterpreted... and I am trying to tease you...

As I interpret the thread, it's as much of a log and a reference -- like any other build thread.  He's being thorough, that's why it's like a log.  But I know from a glance already I would do things differently.  So it's not paint by the numbers at all.  Even if it were, who here would actually stick to the specified paints and numbers.... ?   :D  We're all different.  We all make mistakes.  We all like to see how others are doing it.  Let's don't discourage sharing and info.   Just a thought.

Hey Tommy,

Sorry, my comments were directed at SIXTYNINER! I prob should have used the quote box, will edit it later. He is being a party pooper, just as he derailed the 2254c build thread he is doing the same here with his 'sarcastic' comments (please read that thread for the backstory, which included a fair bit of libel directed at Igor, and some detailed help/support from Kambo, that seems to have been shrugged off).

I support reanimatorstudio all the way with this thread, but for SIXTYNINER to say this is not a "quality" project, reeks of bitterness, we are blessed to have this project and Igor's boards and designs are a works of art, so what if there are one or 2 designation errata, these are covered in the support thread!

My point about the 5 working units was just to say it works! And they sound great, but you've got to put in the effort to complete it, but it is most certainly a "quality" project.

Cheers

Matt

Matt, thanks for the clarification!  Glad you didn't take offense...  ;D  I never would have got that connection just from the posts....  long live this project!

reanimatorstudio, keep going!

...."sarcastic" ?   ???
here i see 33609 not 2254c :
  http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg291/diy33609/BOM1.gif
        http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg291/diy33609/BOM2.gif

        http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg291/diy33609/pcb_fp_btm.gif

Then only some "explanation" about :

To "matta" (with all respect) the 2254c project is really a god project -
BUT I PREFER MUCH MORE MY -M A N - L E Y- COMPRESSORS.
(and if a day, i go to sell the M A N - L E Y  i get a right "Value" , ...try to sell a "clone"...)

About my posts at 2254c build support ("conference") :

1- To "that"  "Uk guy" i asked some good picture about the 2254c he making.....(he said that its units was near to complete..)

ONLY AND ONLY- as support for ALL GUYS that got and PAID (as me) pcbs and kits from "mr" "i g o r" !!!

that "uk guy" reply me in this way : i don't have good digital camera .
but some day after the same "uk guy" put for sale at black market   3 (three)  2254c finished units with many large detailed pictures.
then the only reason why he said "i don't have good digital camera " was
that it wanted to be the first to end the 2254c units for being able to sell it before all the others guys.

no problems about from me , HE CAN SELL ALL THAT HE WANT .....

but JOKE with some serious members of this "place" is other thing ..

2- I received the PAID kits from "mr" "i g o r" , package arrived to me with all parts MASHED UP (by shipping guys i suppose)
resistors,capacitors,diodes,etc... (LITTLE DISASTER),

i notify this to "i g o r"  with good pictures ,
Then he asked to me to check all parts and make a list of eventual disappeared parts
then send the list to he .

it's exaclty that i done !  (i LOST around  3 half days about..)

the reply was :
WHAT YOU WANT FROM ME .
(wow really great support)

what i want from you ??? ??? ??? ------- I ONLY DONE THAT YOU ASKED ME !!!!

(....probably he had a much stressed period...caused by the "hot" season (1 year ago) ...and overall lot of 2254c support requests,
....and also support requests about all others projects he done ..33609 , sontec eq ,control room , bypass cards, pga 2500.. etc ... ,
A REALLY BUSY GUY!!! )

3- i also asked (with pictures) to "mr" "i g o r" :
however in the pictures he posted  as "2254c" at the 2254c build support (conference)
there were different type of resistors (1%) rather then the 5% as in the 2254c kit i received
(the pictures with 1% probably are about 33609)

(do you think a resistor at 1% is the same to the 5% ? ....overall if the 1% is in a "control" side..)

no reply about .....
there is many more about , but i want to "STOP" here!

After a long test on a original Neve  33609 and a 2254 , i sold the 2254 kits .
i got other 2 -M A N - L E Y- compressors.(very very much better then 33609 and 2254)

this is all ...
the rest of "words" posted by that "guys" that only "suck" from this place (without give "support",helps , info , etc..)
for make audio stuffs and sell them for "get" $$$$$$ (i repeat : they can do that they want )
are only "TRASH".

"i g o r " is a great guy for that he do for this "place".
but sometime he have to take "relax" overall for its "brain".

(too much stress cause CANCER !!!)

here i'm for any "explanation" about .
i think to be much different then that described by "someone" .

best regards and cheers to everybody,

Overall to "Jakob" (the "god-father" of diy)
Mr Ethan the "god-admin" of this too much nice place.

Wink
but:

2254c   Huh
or
33609   Huh

Huh

sixtyniner you have to read the title first.

Please I'll try to keep this tread as clean as possible, so it will be as handy as can be.

.......oops i'm forgetting .....
to - "reanimatorstudio"
that you are doing is a great work !
and i'm shure it can become a "supergreat work"
if you make a PDF step by step building "manual" (only and only as Help-support for all members of this place)
like "adrian" done for its cool 1290 preamp project
and "greg" for its "L A 2 A" and other projects...
and more , like "Jakob"(the diy "god-father) done for some of first nice diy projects , appeared on this "sun system" ...
in this way all doubts will disappear....
and many guys will cover you of thankses and ovations..

if you want , i offer my graphics knowhow and part of my free time for make the pdf ,
and you and all others that want to give some helps
supply all info about tech side  .

best regards

This " how to" building thread is not finished yet and will continue till the moment I'll put it in my rack and leave it there because I can not think of any relevant improvement.

Till now I can say. It was not the easiest DIY (I hope this thread will help). But I have to say it worked from the first time, something I can not say from everything I build. It was a pleasure to build thanks to the nice and quality PCB. Comparable with my DIY 1176 from purple audio. That's how high the quality level is of this kit. I can not say it enough: congratulations to Igor and thanks a million times

Finally, I will build a second one and see if my thread can be improved.
But first I'll build his mixbuss compressor in 500 format.

@reanimatorstudio: thanx man! This is great thread. Really, I can't explain better all
these "how-to"!
@6t9r: your way of communication is strange (for me).
As friend's advice, take a schematic, read it, take a look on pcb, maybe, things will be cleaner.
Take some hours for Bible (Horovitz And Hill), this is relaxing and useful reading,
dunno...take a shot of good whiskey, or do some yoga....but don't be a PITA! :)

Hello "mr" "i g o r"
what "honor" have a reply , also if only "sarcastic" (as say "matta")
be ever the "Pos" n°1
have a good diy life
best regards
;)

dear "reanimatorstudio"
i only put on your evidence that some things in the 2254 project  are not much clear .... nothing else
(how many many members of this forum do anyday on the many projects "conferences" taht run in this place)
i never said-wrote nothing about mr "matta" and about that he say-write in this forum,
he wrote about me in a not "friendly" way , then is my right say that i have to say .
say to mr "matta" to write only about the project and not about the members !!!
with all respect
:)

Please 6t9r could you delete http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=36955.msg488351#msg488351

This has nothing to do with How to build a stereo 2254C step by step.
Yes, you can make a PDF but put it in a separate thread. This thread is supposed to be on your screen when soldering. Nowbody is interested in the blablabla at that particulary moment.

Igor, you don't have to thank me. That honour goes 100% to you and all supporting guys, like those who make cases. Where is the time I was breadboarding and drilling holes! Yes that was the time when DIY was ugly, inferior and almost impossible to repair. Here at prodigy you see everyday units that are more desireble than consumer products.
Respect for all those guys behind there tiny and massy tables, beating big name companys

Slow down there Reanimator,  This is a great thread, I'm hoping to build one of these beasts when $$$ are better.  I'll hope to be using this thread when I finally do.  Sixtynine,  You really need to realize that this is reanimators attempt to give us a helpful build thread.  It might not be perfect in your eyes but this is DIY, a little help from reanimator goes a long way...

Sixtyniner, you seem determined to spoil this thread.  We all welcome corrections and information, but this is not the correct thread or forum for an attack on the project or on other members.

Please make positive contributions and let the author continue.

Matta and I already got confused and upset by your stuff on page 1.  Please be a constructive member of our community.

Very nice build. I liked old good 3055's :)
BTW, there's chassis gnd layout at output section (around input/output connectors),
I suppose it connected to case at XLR's pin1, as I can't see it connected at power
supply 4-pin connector. Congrats!

Wow....1uf is too fast release for me! OK....
But this is the best way to learn.
Assemble the unit, change this or this part, listen and measure...whole funny thing!

Zobel network not always needed when transformer is loaded properly.
2254's transformers loaded exactly by their specs and overshoot
is very small even without Zobel network.
BTW, on different source impedances there will be different amount of transformer's overshoot.
It means, overshoot resonant frequency- (it caused by leakage inductance and
parasitic capacitance), remains same, but amount of overshoot varies due to we changing the "q" of "filter" with series resistance.
Different soundcards and mixers, (sources) sounds bit different with transformer-input devices
not just by this reason, there are many other factors like thd versus frequency of
transformer at different levels, how does output amp of devise working into spreaded capacitance of trafo's primary, etc etc. Trafos is woodoo, even if you know how it works :)

Regarding the gain switch, I had somewhere values for 1db steps, will try to find them.

Output attenuator can be good idea, just fit here 1k 1W lin pot at the output
("low" end of pot goes to minus of out. trafo thru 200 Ohm resistor, hi end of pot goes to trafo +,
wiper goes to plus output, point where 200 Ohm connected with - of trafo goes to - output).
This will give smooth range over about 15db at the output.

It's too bad that this thread is no longer. I was reading all the info on it in preparation for my own 2254 build, and I had a power supply question I was going to ask. Oh well...

Yeah, what happened?  This used to be 2 pages...?  Huh?  I too still have to build mine... was looking forward to this thread.
