Step 2. If I get a better preamp do I need a better compressor, equalizer, mixer, monitors, room treatments, headphones, and car stereo?

Fun times recording and a happy wallet.  :)
 
used a terratec dmx6fire for the last few years purely for my ITB stuff.
But now I'm expanding my mastering set up with analogue summing and GSSL, I've gont for a MOTU 24IO, it really is no messing around, 48 Jack sockets, flexible routing, as for quality... well its MOTU.
Does everything I need and a bit more
