Hi All
Today i received from schaeffer ag the news !!!
Here it is :

Dear customers,

Version 4.0 of the Front Panel Designer is now available. Please order
your front panels from now on using the new version of the Front Panel
Designer. The prices calculated by the Front Panel Designer Version 4.0
are valid from the 1st of April 2010. These replace the calculations
made by earlier versions. You can download this version from our website
or with the following link:
http://www.schaeffer-ag.de/en/download/front-panel-designer.html.

The new Version 4.0 runs under Linux, Windows and MacOS X and offers an
integrated import filter and export filter for DXF files as standard.

The import of DXF files makes the design of exterior and interior
contours possible without restrictions, which means that the design of
front panels is not limited to simple geometric shapes. Consequently the
design of components of any shape is possible, which may be of interest
in the fields of model making, mechanical engineering (prototype
construction) and design.

An additional feature in Version 4.0 is the capture function at the
reference point for example, which allows elements to be positioned even
more comfortably and quickly on the front panel.

The Front Panel Designer user interface has also been revised in Version
4.0.

We would very much appreciate your feedback on version 4.0, also in our
forum at:

<http://www.schaeffer-ag.de/en/support/forum.html?view=single_thread&cat_uid=3&conf_uid=10&thread_uid=1941>

We look forward to continuing our co-operation.

Best regards
Schaeffer AG

Just tried the DXF export with FPD4.0
I can open the resulting file with SolidWorks DWGeditor, but I get an error when trying to open with Illustrator CS4.
If I save the file in DWGeditor to "AutoCAD 2007 ASCII" format, it will then open in Illustrator.
According to Adobe, Illustrator CS4 only supports AutoCAD 2006 and older DXFs.

With what app are you trying to open the exported DXF?
Or is FPD not generating the DXF file?

The US version, Front Panel Express, doesn't show the 4.0 or Mac software.  Are they the same company?  Do they use the same software?  How will prices be calculated using the European software for N. American customers?....

Hope they are opening to Mac now.

Free export filters galore. Awesome. Didn't notice at first.

Ok. So the export function doesn't do anything for me. No exported files.  ???

ha, why would they implement DXF export for free!? Im jolly glad they did though, makes my life one hell of a lot easier..

FWIW, I downloaded the Linux version (.deb) and it seems to works flawlessly.
I exported a DXF file, and opened it with Inkscape. Worked!
I modified the design with Inskape, then exported as a .plt (HPGL), re-imported it under FPD, and it worked too!

Happy Linux user here!

Since Inkscape (which is an open source software similar to Illustrator) also works under MAC or WIN32, you guys may give it a try...
