What transformers and/or ratios suit the b283 card?  I know that Carnhill carries a version of the original TX but is there a cheaper option or a different option?

because of the high DC current going through the primary you need a gapped transformer. the only alternative to carnhill that I am aware of is ed andersons version, which you will find at hairball audio on the white market. I tried the same build of a peter purpose EQN with both the carnhill and the ed anderson transformers and they both sound great.  :)
you should check if JLM do a neve type output transformer, as this would save you on shipping on these weighty buggers...
