Played my Stratocaster through my Fender Tweed Clone (with Alnicos) and the Shure SM57 in front (on axe) to test how SM57 works with high or low impedance

1.- GREENPRE without any modification (Hi Z = 5K ) http://www.mediafire.com/?rpl6xhhrl0y63m2
2.- GREENPRE with the modification (Low Z = 600 ohms) but without adjusting the gain that is lost with the mod http://www.mediafire.com/?aal58qm8ij3s751
3.- GREENPRE with the modification (Low Z = 600 ohms) but after one "click" more gain to level to the first test http://www.mediafire.com/?b226dc575u6qwl2

So, which would you like it more:  1 or 3 (please forgive that they are MP3s)

I'm on my laptop and haven't even listened to your files.

But for conclusive results you should bring all files to the same RMS level (not peak level) and perhaps use different material. Electric guitar is drops off at about 7 kHz. Acoustic guitar and voice are usually the best signals for listening tests.

You have to have a very consistent performer though. Sound change through variable impedance is pretty subtle, usually, so any real sound change is likely to be drowned out by different performance and/or different level.

Rossi is right but still, we can here differences between your samples : 3 is brighter, 1 is warmer, depends on what is your reference !
I can't tell wich one is best because 1- It's very subjective 2- It depends of your mix. Usually the brighter fits better in a mix but you know that "there is no rule" !  ;D
Anyway, you should have play the exact same part for your samples, it would have been way easier to compare, especially when differences are subtile.  ;)

Best,

Ben
