thanks! it's getting a bit over my head though.

I will build one and see how I go.

Can anyone point me to a resource for building DC converters?

also does anyone have a recommendation for a good transformer that's readily available for mic output, if I want to try a K84 type circuit as well? lundahl?

Look in the microphone metas.
search engine
lots of information at this site and some other sites

I have looked, I wouldn't ask if I could find the info. :(

I guess I'm searching for the wrong things. Doubtless I'd learn a lot if I read every post on here, but that would take weeks.

I have some examples of DC converters , but no discussion of why one is better than another or which parts are critical and which are not.

The better DC converters seem to use mini ferrite transformers which I can't find for sale, are they called something else I should search for?

Likewise there's the occasional mention of this or that transformer, but I haven't found anything saying X transformer is a top choice for a simple fet microphone. I'll try a circuit with a OEP A262A3E and upgrade to a LL1538 unless someone tells me a better idea.
