2 ssl questions

I just got my ssl working and only 1/2 of the unit is working.

Any tips on figuring out what is wrong with the other half?

Also, when I was checking out the behringer ADA8000 thread it talking about replacing the 1074 ics with something better. Is there a better choice of ic for the ssl too?

Yeah, only 1 ch. is working. Any ideas how to locate the point of failure?

swap your thats and see if one of them is dead...

Hmm.. Do I run the risk of trashing the other VCA?

Yep, if you shorted something around there by mistake..

Check and check again for shorts on the pcb-side, for bad soldering - and for wrong components.

So the short is prolly close to the vca?

If the second VCA burns out too, yes.

If not, it could be anywhere in the audio part of the circuit - i.e. not in the sidechain..

when I powered mine up, it let the magic smoke out of one of the VCAs.

SO, I pulled the VCAs and compared them pin for pin with a meter, found that they were drastically different. Ended up replacing the 5534 next to the bad VCA and that made the pins have the same voltages on them. When I popped new VCAs back in, all was well.
