Feedback on DIY mics? Degree of difficulty?
« on: January 10, 2011, 06:45:05 AM »
What is the degree of difficulty in regards to DIY mics for all you mic builders as compared to other DIY builds?

I did the 500 series units thinking it would be alot easier than rack builds, but I was wrong with that.

Wondering how mics ranks, even though they look like they have less parts, maybe they are harder to build because of:
- harder to source parts?
- making custom parts or customizing parts is most likely needed since building the mic requires different suppliers or designers materials and trying to gel it together?
- not much support?
- hard to problem solve or calibrate?
- most likely requiring troubleshooting?

Whats the value ratio on these as compared to retail products, like are they money saving like La2a and 1176 diys are?

Thanks

They are fiddly, start with some basic mods on some cheap mics, build your confidence.  Go from there.

Modded mics are WAY more valuable than their cost!

Insofar as new builds, the main areas of criticality are (in no particular order):

1) very high impedance input stage, susceptible to contamination and noise

2) acoustic design and resonance

3) noise factor of impedance converter element and overall circuit design

4) extra clean PSU requirement

5) mic-body building, making all the mechanical parts fit together can be a real PITA if you want to save money AND achieve good and durable results. Be prepared to scratch your head. Ideas all around the forum, e.g. :http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=42181.0

... but in the end, what a pride and fun...
