Hi

Does anyone know of a Neve 1271 or 1272 kit currently available?  I only need a line amp like the originals were but it depends whats out there.

Also, how do people rate this as a project for a beginner? I'm thinking of doing something simple like a cable tester first and then say a DI and a GSSL but after those probably this.

Does that sound feasible or is this much more advanced?

I don't think there's a full kit out there.  But they're not the most complicated things in the world.

You'll need the right transformers, a BA183 card, some other bits and bobs and a 24VDC power supply.

Use the search function at the top left of the page to look for BA183 and BA283 related articles.

If you don't think you want to get that involved, you can always buy them brand new.

Yeah I knew of the BAEs but I'm thinking DIY would be much cheaper.

I've got a source for the transformers so that should be ok. I'll do a search for the 183 card now.

So is the design just the card and the transformer? Apart from the ps, do I need anything else?

Here's the 1272 module schematic. The B183AV (also known as BA183AV or BA283AV) can be bought, or you could use the EZ1290 board and omit what you don't need.

Ah great! Cheers! Yeah 1271 would probably be better considering I only want a simple line amp.

Dan Alexander has 183 and 283 cards for sale so I can prob just grab some of those.

Is there a sonic difference between the cards?
 
Martin (does the ez1290) also has an LN72 which is basically a 283 line amp. Here:

I think the pcb's are either $12 or $15 ea. Transformers for a channel are going to be 70 to 100 or so. Parts for the PCB are about 25 or so +/-... Plus any chassis, PSU, knobs, or other extra's you might want. Fader? Think you can spend almost $100 on a nice one or about $4 on a not so nice one.

This build looks pretty straightforward and modifying it to do some other stuff is also possible if you look around a little.

It doesn't say M though so not sure if they're the right ones, does anyone know?

If they are right, that would probably save me a lot of time, though i'd probably learn more off doing it myself with the LN72.

Does anyone know if there's a sonic difference between the 1272 and 1271? I presume if the cards are the same and they have the same transformers there shouldn't be a difference though I'd heard there was a difference in the amount of gain.

No sonic difference, just more gain.

The cards are not the same though. The /AM has only one amp stage, the /AV has two, hence 20 - 30dB more gain available.

Also, the transformers are different. 10468 vs 31267. Different impedance for mic/bus or line.

So if I wanted to build this with gain and output knobs would I need the AV version?

And the transformer for a line amp would be the 10468?

Sorry if these questions are stupid I'm new to this.

1271 uses B183/AM single stage amp, gain 15dB (you can increase this to 35dB with emitter shunt resistor on pad K), 31267 w/series primary for a 10k input, best for line level signals.

1272 uses B183/AV dual stage amp, the second stage gives an extra 18-48dB of gain (RC shunt on pad T) for mic or bus applications, 10468 input.

Both schemes allow provision of a trimpot or fader (or both) before the output stage (between pins K and L on the schemos I posted above).


If you just want a line amp or buffer, I'd go with 1271 and 10k input.

(Sorry the schems are so big, didn't realise! ;D)
