Seriously WTF is a Quantum Purifier. If there were anything that sounded like snake oil in the industry of audio this would have to be it. Any engineers or other individuals care to explain what the heck this thing does?

Please and thank you  ;D

You don't have Google in San Franciscofornia? Bybee Tech's explanation is easy to find.

http://www.bybeetech.com/ourtech.asp

and remember - it's still too classified to discuss openly, but not to sell publicly, so don't ask.

I have seen the explanation on the Bybee website but I guess I was attempting to gather opinions to the validity of such claims by PP members with understanding of such concepts that surpass my own.

Sorry to bother and/or not be clear about what I'm asking.

I can't tell if there is sarcasm being used here or if your serious ???

It was sarcasm - not toward your question - toward the "tech" blurb.    ;)

It's classified, all right.
Classified as BULLSHIT, WEAPONS-GRADE.

EDIT: Post based on the review here:
http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1202/bybee.htm
Obviously the reviewer was in direct contact with Bybee, and had some of the 'black magic' explained and/or contrived more thoroughly along the way.

I haven't found a single null test performed (and then explained away for lack of results  ::) ) in almost an hour of leisurely searching. I think that speaks for itself. If we accept the assertions that:
1) 1/f noise is dominating the noisefloor in the targeted device
2) 1/f noise is frequency dependent
3) 1/f noise is not broadband, and has a well-defined spectrum
4) shot and Johnson noise are not being targeted by the device

then it stands to reason that it should be testable. If it's dominating the noisefloor, its absence should be rather conspicuous (all things being relative). Johnson noise in microphones strikes me as an appropriate correlation. If the 1/f noisefloor is significantly quieter in a comparable scenario, it wouldn't be perceptible anyhow- ergo the whole thing is moot. Frequency dependence means there's a nice variable there to tweak, and we're given where to look to prove claims (<2kHz). White noise isn't targeted, and since it's a theoretically consistent average throughout the spectrum it should either have no effect on testing or do it democratically.

Instead of this approach, all I've read so far are unsubstantiated claims and fanboy reviews. Not unexpected... such is the dark and depraved art of audiophilia.

Bybee Quantum Purifiers operate on the quantum mechanical level to regulate the flow of electrons that make up the signal (picture a metering light regulating freeway traffic flow).

I think Heisenberg would have something to say about this.

Does anyone remember their thermodynamics classes? The Maxwell's Daemon thought experiment? It reminded me of that.

(Maxwell's Daemon was a little guy who opened a (frictionless) tap whenever a particle went one way, and closed it when it tried to go the other. Of course this creates order and reduces entropy, so I think one conclusion was that the information collected (i.e. looking at the particle and making a decision) was a thermodynamic parameter and led to an increase in entropy elsewhere. There's a better description here....)

this was my first thought, almost verbatim.  the electrons inducing that thought obviously did some impressive quantum tunneling  :D
from his page, it's stated in such a way that it suggests some sort of 'probability filter' that either narrows the possible positions in which the electron may be found or absorbs the errant ones.  let's not break particle physics all at once!

Anyone have some test gear for measuring "quantum noise" on their bench.  ;)

Instead of attributing this to "audiophoolery" - it's just another form of paid protection.  Probably as old as the oldest profession on Earth.

if you define 'quantum noise' broadly, you can lump johnson (thermal) noise in with shot noise... so really you're measuring its contributions whenever you're looking at the noise floor.  neither of these real-world phenomena are purported to be addressed by the product though, and the existence of the 1/f noise it supposedly does filter is dubious at best.

We should consider marketing cooling systems as "quantum refrigerators." It targets the real cause of undisputedly real noise, and thus might have a real effect. Crazy, I know.

Jack Bybee's Quantum Purifiers were originally developed for military applications, many of which are still highly classified...

I believe that. After realising that they were conned off by millions of Dollars they buried the manuals so deep in the vaults to make sure never to see the light of the day.

Few thousand years from  now a sheep herder would fall into a cave in Nevada Desert and discover these high classisfied stuff like the Dead Sea Scrolls. They'll go "gee, they knew about quantum purifiers".

reminds me of that guys "perfect listening room" that was posted a couple weeks ago... im sure hes got these hooked up to all his gear. (didnt he have a time travelling cylendar that allowed the singnal to revert to its original state or something... i just remember laughing hard at the description... gotta find that link again!)
