Hi Chunky,
There's a car polish out in that thar' automobeel world that is used to accomplish just what you seek.
And it works!!
Especially on scratches that have not reached the base metal.

Toothpaste on your thumb and lots of rubbing.

After that, it requires automotive body-shop skills. DIY paint repair may work OK or may be disappointing.
 
Considering most painted gear is done with satin or semi-gloss paint, you don't want to buff it too much or you'll end up with a high gloss on that spot. Try some 2000 grit sandpaper (wet) with a small rubber block. This may be enough on it's own as it leaves a kind of satiny surface.
