Hi there

I'd like to build a ssl clone as my first diy project. After trying to get answers by using the search-function and the meta I only found this post for wiring the IEC:
http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=43231.0

...but nothing about general wiring issues  :(

Long story short: Which wire would you recommend for this purpose?

P.S. I'd like to buy it from farnell, conrad or mouser.

Urs

I usually load up on 20 and 22 AWG Teflon from Apex Jr.

http://apexjr.com/wire.html

However, you haven't specified your location so I don't if that's feasible for you.

I typically use 18 gauge stranded insulated copper wire for mains. Just the regular stuff I get at the local electronics store. 18 gauge is rated for 15 amps of current, which is typically overkill for most projects. I'd suggest getting a fused IEC connector such as Schurter 6200.2100 (Mouser Part # 693-6200.2100), and a heavy duty DPDT type power switch. You can use an SPST type as well, but I like the to be able to fully disconnect the power from the transformer.

Make sure to keep the ground wire short.

Wow, you guys are fast!

I live in switzerland (Yes, I love chocolate, and no, I'm not a banker)  ;D

Back to topic: what do you suggest for wiring let's say LEDs or switches, things like that?

To be concrete:

- Conductor Size AWG?
- Strand size/diameter?
- Voltage Rating?
- Jacket Material?

Thanks

My earlier answer was in regard to non-power wiring requirements.  I usually prefer stranded.

I use regular Radio Shack stranded copper 18 and 20 AWG for mains wiring.  I wouldn't worry so much about getting the highest grade wire available.  Especially with your first builds.  ;)

So you are not a banker? I was sure you were.

I use 22 or even 24 awg wire for everything but mains. Just packs of stranded copper wire from the local store. Don't need to get fancy. For signal wires, it's a good idea to use twisted pairs of wire to help keep noise down.

Good luck on the first project!

Hi all,

I'm new here (have been lurking around though) and didn't want to start a new thread.
I also have a question about hook-up wire:

I'm currently working on the mnats 1176 rev d and I've bought some wire to work with, but I'm not sure whether or not it's the right one.
It's this wire (it's in dutch): http://www2.conrad.nl/goto.php?artikel=605808

For the non-dutch people, this is what the chart says:

- it's not free of halogen
- cabletype: LiY
- it's not shielded
- the guy at the store told me it's stranded

Will this do the job?

I also bought this one for the safety ground: http://www2.conrad.nl/goto.php?artikel=601883

Is this also a correcet wire? (It's tinned, halogen free and TPE-06 isolated)

Hey!

Nice to se another Dutchman here!
I buy my hookup wire at Banzai Music: http://www.banzaimusic.com/Wire-Value-Pack-VP25-MULTICOLOR.html

They also sell the wire I use for mains wiring: http://www.banzaimusic.com/Wire-1-0mm-green-yellow-10m.html. They also carry brown and blue.

I couldn't open your link, so I can't give you any advise on that...

hey tzman, thanks for the link, I'll keep those in mind if the ones I bought aren't correct :)

Apparently you can't link to a specific product on the conrad.nl page so here's how to get to the ones I'm talking about:

go to www.conrad.nl and on the left enter in the 'Zoeken' (search) bar: 605808

That's the first one, the other one uses product code 601883

I've had that problem before. You'll have to click "Directe productlink" on the right and than copy paste that URL...

The mains wire looks ok, I would recommend the hookup wire to be a bit heavier though... I use 0,25 mm2.

I'm sure the 0,14 will handle the current, It's just a bit harder to handle because it's so thin...

fixed the links.

Something like this? http://shop.conrad.nl/607974.html
So it's okay it's not tinned then? Since mnats recommends this.

Sorry for asking these easy questions, I'm just new to it all and I'm trying to learn as I'm going..

That looks ok, but maybe a bit too expensive and overrated for the job.

I prefer tinned myself too. Found another link for you:
http://www.baco-army-goods.nl/kabels-en-connectoren/montagedraad/montagedraad-assortiment-soepele-kern-kmow.html. But I can really recommend the stuff Banzai sells.

Don't worry too much though, it's really not that important. I think it comes down to personal preference in the end...

The 0,14mm you ordered should be ok!

Oh, and don't worry about asking questions either, this place is all about sharing knowledge! :)

Ok, so I finally have all the materials for my 1176 project except a single conductor shielded wire. I need something like mnats uses in his wiring guide: Mogami 2444 (http://mnats.net/1176_reva-d_hairball_wiring_ratio.html). Problem is I can't find a store that sells these here. Now I'm looking for a similar cable. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I found this one on Mouser (http://nl.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Alpha-Wire/1703-SL005/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMuPnr6I6Psi5S1WpheXgGHs6V9TE4NtKyw%3d but it's expensive and it's 24AWG which might be too thick for it to fit in the Molex socket. Any other suggestions, preferably in the Mouser store?
Thanks

Hank, thanks for your reply. I already have 24 AWG hook-up wire in all sorts of colors. What I understand from mnats his wiring guide is that I also need to use a different kind, a single conductor shielded wire. He uses Mogami 2444 which is 32 AWG. This is for wiring pin 6 in the ratio circuit. This is no hook-up wire as far as I understand.

Anyone who can point me in the direction where to find single conductor shielded wire, around 32 AWG? Something like Mogami 2444 and either sold at Mouser or in an online store that ships to the Netherlands?
Thanks
