Berlant Concertone

I just picked up a pair of these recorder preamp/interfaces for cheap and haven't found much about them.  I know some folks use them as mic preamps (mixed reviews, but there are some rabid fans), but mine are missing the mic input and output transformers.  I've temporarily wired in some Webster Electric input transformers, but they don't have the step-up the originals must have had since I'm not getting the "tons of gain" that others talk about when using the originals.  As a result, by the time I get the gain high enough the noise floor is too high as well. 

Anyway, has anyone had any experience with these beasts?  Transformer recommendations?  Mods?

ours has missing Input Transformers too and as you said gets quite noisy when pulling the gain way up.
I'm planning some mods on it this year too..will keep you updated =)
We're using it for creating a nice overdriven Vocal sound
