Someone posted this link on GS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=OZOVZQgXl9k]www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=OZOVZQgXl9k]https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=OZOVZQgXl9k

I found this to be a really informative little video.  I think he strikes the right balance between practical technique and the technical underpinnings.  And his focus on the sound is refreshing.  It's too bad that there are no audio demonstrations, but if he says that it sounds good, I'm gonna believe it does.

A lot of people (most of whom I've never heard of and am unfamiliar with their work) make instructional DVDs and I've never been interested, but if GM made one I'd buy it.  And next time I see that he's doing a technical session at AES, I think I'll spend the money and attend.

I'm looking at more GM on YouTube and will add links here to stuff I like, as I find it.

nice video, i love the philosophy to chose the right position of the mics.
It's my first choice, a good tunning of the drumset, a nice room and a good drummer before any comp/eq.
thx

so his overheads are placed on a 2d plane like this.

I'm going to try it next time. Wonder how different it would be with a blumline ribbon set up vs spaced cardioid sdc's.

I've been doing it this way for a couple of years and have been very pleased with the results I've gotten.  I will say that the past couple of sessions I've done I've also added a M/S set-up about 4 feet in front of the drums along with the overheads and found myself not using the overheads at all in some cases.

you mean perpendicular to your line ? your line is the center of the stereo image ie kick and snare smack bang in the middle. overheads equidisdant to that. I think its a great schem and will try it at next opportunity.

the line would be where the overheads are placed in Massenburg's case small diaphragm condensers. the line denotes the angle at which the overheads are placed and depending on what you wish for stereo image, you would simply space them farther apart. You can even go as to have one mic be placed higher so the angle is going at an incline

huh? I think you have it exactly wrong  :D Unless words are just too confusing for it!

Surely if you put the overheads on your line you have kick on the left and snare right. Putting them further apart on your line makes a distant left kick and a distant right snare. He is saying the line is your stereo center, and overheads at varying distances either side of that gives you good stereo while maintaining that kick/snare center.

Between 2:45-3 minutes on the vid he literally stands looking down your line and moves his arms in and out to illustrate this..?

Nope, equal distance to snare and bassdrum to center them. Your line is mirrored.

I've been recording drums like this for about 8 years now. I like it. If you check out billybauerband, all of the drums were recorded like that.
