Never tried it, interesting thread though.  Got plenty of sticky 456 to try it on.    :p

Here's another rather heated debate:

* I have only one sticky reel of 456, that I figured at some point I'd "bake" and transfer.

I am very skeptical.  NuFinish is petro based and that is a bad mix with tape.  Actually, I don't trust it on my car either.

Dopes use WD40 as a switch cleaner and it works great!! until it off-gasses and eats away certain plastics.

And baking is only a temporary fix to salvage a tape for transfer.  It will shed and flake degrading quickly if used as a recording medium.

Richard Hess's website has a lot of information about magnetic tape. Before you follow that wannabe-webguru-advise and use NuFinish you should at least read this page: http://richardhess.com/notes/formats/magnetic-media/magnetic-tapes/analog-audio/degrading-tapes/
My 2 cents.

So has anybody done this?  It's been 7 years since posted, so it's time tested, for the most part.  From other sites I've visited, the updates seem to show the tapes that had this done are still fine.  And the original poster on another site had already gone 11 years to that point, which was 2007, if I recall.

On Tapeheads forum conclusion seems like NuFinish treatment for sss syndrome is not a permanent fix.  Might help if having squealing issues.

I have used the Nu Finish treatment on a master tape I recorded in Jan 65. It is on Audio Tape. It responded well to the treatment.
Only one selection was lost;p that was due to the tape not packing properly on rewind. I tried to pull the tape tighter& it screwed up the one selection; Fortunately it was a selection I could afford to lose.

If you follow Lance Lawsons instructions it will work. The recording was not negatively affected in any way; sounds just as good as when originally recorded. Compared the tape playback to the test pressing of the album, no difference. I would recommend that all tape splices be replaces & any sticky residue be removed w 409; it will not damage the tape. When this is done treat w Nu Finish & let dry for at least 24hrs or more.

Do not use Isopropyl Alchohol to clean loose residue off the tape before applying Nu Finish; as it dries out what my be an already brittle tape.

Disregard the criticism at Home Recording. Some of the members are very argumentative.
