I have purchased a MRL tape from a gent in France. The shipping costs so far have been very high.

Does anyone have a recomendation for a good method for shipping a tape across the pond?

I don't think you have much choice.
Colissimo will charge between 50-70 Euros ($70-100) for a 4-5 kg parcel, depending on the declared value and choice of insurance.
DHL and Fedex are between 150-200 Euros.
