I like the idea of getting my own CNC for PCBs and engraving stompbox enclosures. I've been looking around at the different kits about there, but still can't seem to part with close to a grand for a machine.

I know it's probably unreasonable to expect something in the few hundred dollar range, but do you guys have any suggestions or leads for me to follow?

The problem is that the cheap machines are little more than toys.

The cheapest I've seen halfway-decent machines (in europe) is some $2K - without machining spindle.

But it's a fast-growing market, and surely some of the inexpensive chinese will be ok.

We just don't know which. A simple rule-of-thumb could be heavier=better.

Maybe ask at one of the dedicated cnc-forums?

To get a sense of the prices make a search on ebay for "cnc mill", or "cnc engraver" and set "sort by price". In any case, when you shop make sure the machine comes with driver and software, otherwise you will need to add about $100 for Xylotex driver (Geico is more expensive) and $175 for Mach3, to make it work.

Best, M
