i've been trying to track down pictures or diagrams of the actual neumann km56 capsule assembly for days now without luck.  i can find pictures of the body w/o tube, but unfortunately the capsule/headbasket is also detached.  as i understand, it was merely two kk54 capsules positioned back to back- but there's gotta be at least one or two critical measurements in order to get it right.  anyone have some insight here?

I got some km86's, the solid state counterpart. I do not know how much different the head basket and mount is but if u want, i can snap a few pictures and take some measurements. On the km 86 it is two capsules back to back with maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch of space between.

Perhaps this helps .

thanks bernd, i think i remember seeing that in passing now but i wish it was less of a 'porn' shot and more useful for purposes of replication.  this looks considerably different than the km86, though it would still be worth getting a good idea of how it was done in both instances.  if you'd be so kind pucho, main things i'd be curious about in the km86 would be
-inter-capsule distance
-the lowdown on the little plastic obstacle between capsules
-headbasket geometry

KM 86 capsules are very different from KM56 capsules.  The former are indeed two separate cardioid capsules back to back -- and the headbasket is much larger to accommodate this.  Whereas from my memory (and the picture above seems to bear this out), the KM56 capsule is all of one piece.

the plot thickens!  i finally found a pretty good neumann document both showing and describing how the dual kk54 capsules were combined to make a kk56.  link to the tech docs at bottom.  doesn't look like the 'distance foil' puts much distance between the two backplates at all, though i'm speculating that it's still enough to keep the labyrinth more elaborate than direct coupling?  it's not there for electrical insulation, but i'd be shocked if it wasn't there for something.
