This seems to work well for positive  (78**) regulators to increase the output  1/2 a volt or so, how about on a negative (79**)?
Any known problem using more than one diode (as in 2 in series to get 1 volt increase)?
I'm looking for a quick & easy way to get some -16 volt lines, I have some 7915s...

Sure, throw in as many as you want! Watch the polarity though. You can also use LEDs, zener diodes, ...

They also can be used for high voltage regulators, just have to lift the reference high enough. All you have to look out for is the maximum input to output voltage difference.

I've seen this done to prevent latch-up back in the bad old days.  Consider adding a cap shunt across the diode so regulator still sees a clean ground.
