hey guys, just entering the diy world and im already hooked haha but excuse me if any of my questions seem stupid or are have already been answered some where, just please redirect me.

looking at building a hairball audio/ mnats  1176 (one of several i plan to be building this year) but i was looking at the BOM page on mnats and found a resistor that is only sold in units of 5000, well i dont plan on building that many so i next checked out digi key.

which one would work better
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll (link doesnt go to reisitors i search, also didnt see they were unavailable)

to substitute

can anyone find a replacement for me?

Go to the link and click on the revision you are doing.  It will redirect you to a full mouser project of the kit your are working on with the units you need.  I am currently building a stereo 1176 revD right  now......literally right now.  Just make sure you check the resistors and caps.  I found some that were labeled correctly, but they don't register on my meter correctly.  Good luck.

thanks man good luck on yours! i really want a stereo 1176 but this is going to be my first so im going to start small haha.

i was planning on doing the rev F, and one set of resistors is only sold in sets of 5000, https://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?AccessID=539874ec88

rev D looks like the one i should try to build though, since one of the stereo models is Rev D.

is that your first one?

This is my first 1176 build.  I just got done building two AML EZ1073's.  My first build was 2 Classic API 500 series vp 26s and 2 vp312s models.  AML and Classic API builds have great guides and it is hard to mess them up.  This project doesn't have that great of a guide and is geared more towards the more experienced.  I would not consider myself the more experienced.  I have alot of questions on this build and hope someone on the board can help.

If this is your first build........I would take your time on this one.  Don't rush it.  When you get your resisters and caps I would test all of them.  Some of the resisters I received from mouser where not the correct values.  They have the correct value on the packaging, but its not what my meters is reading.

Also, check the mnats BOM.  The one on mouser has a couple of different parts than what is on the mnats BOM.  I will look at the part you are looking at tomorrow and see if I can help you out.  Good luck with your build.

thanks so much! how do the 1073's sound? i was also looking at building a pair, that will be the only question ill ask on that so we dont get too far off topic haha

thanks for the tip of testing each one as well!, normally i dont do that because i trust the ones that are provided with kits. since im kinda on my own here i will make sure to do that! please keep me up dated with your progress and any problems you encounter so that i may look out for those as well!

I haven't tested the 1073's yet.  I am waiting for my cases.  I should test them out anyway, but I am focusing on the 1176 build.  Check out the hairball website for the correct orientation of the trimmers.  It can be confusing and they are a bugger to unsolder.  .....speaking from experience.  The mouser BOM doesn't give you enough 2k trimmers you will need an extra one.  Just a heads up.  Also, my mouser bom there was a weird 9.22uf cap that didn't fit.  It was a weird width.  I would make sure you have two of the WIMA ones.  Lets see oh yeah, on the BOM you will recieve 2n3708 instead of the 2n3707 (which the boards has displayed).  Don't worry you can use these.  This is all for the REVD.  I have populated most of the two main boards.  Just waiting on some parts.  Everyone seems to be out of the xicon 3.9Mohms resistors and the wima 4700pf polypropylene caps.  I don't want to stray from the materials on the BOM to much.  So, I guess I will wait for those to come in.  I want to take my time on this build anyway.  Feel free to pm me.  I don't know how much help I can be, but if I can help I will.

From what I have read the AML 1073's sound pretty awesome.  I have never heard an original, but I have enough clones to get the general idea.  The parts are all really top notch that come with the kit and the instructions are pretty dumby proof.  Like I said make sure you measure the components you put in and make sure you solder points are clean and don't bridge.  Alot of people respect Colin and his work....so I am sure it will live up to the hype.  I mean, you get a kick but 1073 clone with eq for less than a grand......that is worth it.

I found these.  Vishay is a good company.  The Voltage Rating and power rating are different.

Vishay rating:

Power Rating: 600mW
Voltage Rating: 350V

Here is the rating for the ones you have on your BOM (KOA Spear)

Power Rating: 250 mWatts (1/4 Watt)
Voltage Rating: 500 Volts

I know you kinda want to be in the 1/4 Watt area, but you could ask if these specs would be good enough for the board on the appropriate message board post for the REVF.

I hope this helps.
