Just came in a few minutes ago.  Email from Rec.ORG (BigTree as some you already know)

pasted message:

"(your name)  Be WARNED!  not to even attempt to visit Gearslutz right now. This is very unfortunate but they have been hacked by a P O R N ring. If you go there, do not use yourr studio computer."

Not interested in clicking anything to read further.  No idea.

When opportunity comes knocking.

No virus here or any ill effects from visiting the new Gearslutz.

That's a hell of a broad, unsubstantiated claim... Fitting for gearslutz  ;D No real "hack" per se, just a DNS snafu that a smut peddler found and capitalized on by registering their own site. Not really even terribly malicious. It's just like the millions of other ad sites that rely on link clicks. Sounds like everything is sorted out and it's just a matter of waiting for things to update.

I'm just wondering why he saw fit to send out blanket emails for another site.  Just seemed kind of weird.

So that they'll go to his site instead?

I suppose I can understand airing on the side of caution, but on the other hand that site has always seemed like quite the promotional engine. Maybe he's salty now that GS is adopting some of his methods...

EDIT- not that I fault either site for how they run their show or intend to pile on gratuitously. Business is business, giveaways &etc are cool and all. Being here has just steered me hard away from the heavy commercialism.
