Seems to me, if you won't forgive Chapman, you don't understand what Lennon was teaching.

I slept through that Ed Sullivan. I don't feel I missed much. The early work was fine pop, yeah, but mostly they were marketing as a boy-band for the younger sisters of the Bobby-Soxers.

Sgt Pepper was the antidote for pop, sure. But I most remember the August night that Hey Jude debuted on the radio.

PRR,

You make a good point and it would be a hell of a lot easier if he had shown some remorse, I found the Larry King interview almost an obscenity.

We have a family friend who said Chapman told him that he was sorry for killing his friend.

I have another friend who is a public figure and he was shot on the leg by a loner for a reason that the loner wanted acknowledgment.

I don't think we need to forgive or not forgive anybody. The fact is the world is a dangerous place (and I don't exagerate when I say that) and the life we live in carries its own risks.

...and it didn't take long before Elvis Costello had to write, "What's so funny 'bout peace, love, and understanding".
A minor quibble, but he DIDN'T.

Nick Lowe did.

That's what I get for waxing poetic....
Good to know that.

Aaaaaaaaannnnnnddddddd.... Done.

Actually it's an interesting object lesson about the perils of creating a persona for artists based on their art or packaging.

Mel Gibson has done some entertaining movies....

Do we really believe he is the exception to the rule, where the private person is not like the public character... ?

I suspect the ones that are the same are the exceptions. and famous people routinely show their ass, or more in public.
