Does anyone have a circuit for an 1176 transistor tester for the 2n5088's or 2n3708? I would like to test under real world conditions.

What do you want to test? HFE? You can do this with cheap multimeters.
If you want to relate HFE to real world operation, I'd recommend Ch.2 of "The Art of Electronics" by Horowitz and Hill.
Ic=hfe*Ib
With the transistor rules and ohm's law you will have the tools you need.

I assume you want to match the 2N5088 transistors for the meter circuit.
You can buy a cheap meter (for less than £10) that shows hfe.

For the other 2N5088 transistors - use the G version as this has the higher gain needed
i.e. 2N5088G

Alternatively you can get them from me !
(matched pair and 2N5088G)

I have this multimeter from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/250994249356?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_5986wt_1163

And when I am in hfe mode, the transistor value shows 1003-1005 on most of 2n3708 transistors.

Am i doing something wrong? This meter seem to suck big time. It is getting some weird readings on capacitance as well.

Only voltage measures correctly on this meter compared with Fluke.

I need to figure this out...

also,

is it advisable to put all the transistors on 1176's PCB in 3 pin sockets ??? so that way you can swipe them.

What are the disadvantages instead soldering them directly...

I am going to radio shack and get me a cheap multimeter...

So I went to radioshack and got a 50$ multimeter.

on HFE setting, I have measured 20 pieces of 2n3708 bipolar transistors.

1176 rev d guide recommends transistors from above 250 hfe. All my 20 trannies measured 210-221 hfe

on my other multimeter they measure 1000- 1010

Am I doing anything wrong?

Better to post in the 1176 revD build thread:

Someone else is posting about the same issue today.

hfe is normally quoted at a specific current.
Different transistor testers can use different currents (!)
There's even a difference between hfe and HFE.
It can drive you nuts.

Like I say, if you use the high gain variant of a transistor then at least you know it will do the job.
Hence my recommendation of 2N5088G
