GSSL: Why does the sidechain run off 12v...

It says to make it more "stable" for predictable gain. But I've seen other compressors use the same topology, in the fact that they use a lower voltage rail for the sidechain. Is there maybe another reason for doing this? Maybe there is a reason to saturate the sidechain amplifier on purpose?
 
The 12V is used for gain reference. We do not want too much noise in this signal (would cause intermodulation distortion), so we regulate separately from the audio rails.
