Second SSL no worky... :(

bulit my second SSL, dropped it into the chassis of the first, using the control board from the first, and all the jacks/meter/power transformer etc from the first, but the second one doesnt work right.

I get signal, but when you turn the threshold down, it starts to distort terribly.

Nothing to do but to check it throughly. And read the ssl-clone help thread for clues..

is your vca for the sidechain connected right ??

ya, backward to the audio VCAs, which is to say with the notched corner toward the board's edge.

Did you check the ratio's that you are getting? Is it possible that you are getting the "greater than inifinity" ratio problem? The solution is to adjust the input resistors to the audio VCA CV inputs.

that's a possibility... I'll have to do further investigation when I get home, but it seems like the GR meter would sit at about 1/3 of the way over consistently, once you turned the threshold down even a smidge.

I posted an interesting link in the other thread having to do with there being different designs of SSL vcas using different mV/dB constants. It could be part of your trouble.
