Hey guys!

Latley I'm really busy with mixing and I can't spend so much time on my DIY'ing.

I found a guy who can build few projects for me.
He's not an expert in audio equipment but he was working in electronics most of his life.

my question is what will be a fair price to pay for assembly and build of this compressor.

Thanks for your time!

Depends how much his time is worth  (sorry to state the obvious)

BUT -- standard electronics repair rate seems to be around 75$ an hour. A tech charging that shoudl have the board completely stuffed in say 2 hours...racked up in another 2 (probably longer actually) 300$ to 400$ dollars.

Thats if you had the parts all ready to go, but I'm sure you could find someone that could do it for more or less than that.

Thanks Silent, but I have enough parts for three of those so I wan't to use them all :)

if electricians are getting $75/h I'm changing my profession hehe!

I think He will make them for me for around £200 for all three of them so it's not bad ;)

Thanks for the advice!!

Peace!

Just a note; when it comes to debugging and troubleshooting these things, you get what you paid for... I hope he has help or is at least clever enough to find the knowledge he doesn't have, or you're going to be back here with questions about non functioning gear, and he's going to feel like a jerk because he bit off more than he could chew.

Or it could go really well and everyone is happy, who knows.

Yea, its "technician" not "electrician" :D

I always forget how much work actually goes into building a unit, hopefully dude knows his stuff. Not saying it takes a rocket scientist though.

yeah it's not like he's engineering anything from scratch, but more often than not, I see GSSL builds sit and rot in the help threads.

I would have thought the Serpent Audio GSSL would be an easier build, probably timewise after reading the support thread, although I haven't built one (yet!).  It's looks like there is less offboard wiring & full documentation & BOM which saves time.

With the GSSL all the information is out there but you have to go & find it & there are many choices with various circuits & components with add on sections.  Which adds more time to the build!!

Ha! A friend of mine specialising in audio gear repair and refurbishment had a 1176 diy on his bench for a few days and the invoice was ca. £600

If he charges £200 for 3 units I'll give him all the DIY stuff I have around here to do and start chewing on the backlog of mixes I have to do :p

That's WAY too cheap !!
Don't expect 3 fully working and de-bugged circuits for that amount.

You would have to provide every single part AND option, sorted and ready to go, data and all.

If it were me, I would charge about £400 to put one together at very least.

MM.

hehe, He is not a professional in audio equipment that's why he charged me so few, anyways He was taking ages, so after he finished one of them he got 70 quid and my work with his has ended.

and damn, I'm really starting to regret choosing audio engineering degree instead of electronics engineering.
I might consider starting a second degree next year when I'm done with this one.

btw. Anyone in central scotland/capital wanting to teach some electronics? I've got some books but I'm still lacking basics and I'm kind of stuck..

Cheers and have a good new year :)

Then you can maybe appreciate how long building one of those things takes. You paid him about 120$ for a complete SSL build!! Poor guy....I bet he didn't know what he was getting into.

I agree with your choice of going to electronic engineering...A music degree/audio engineering degree is essentially worthless as far as jobs go, unless you want to go into teaching, if you ask me. With an EE degree it is knowledge that can expand for ages and ages and not just stuff us humans made up.
