I have a friend's older (80's?) reissue Teletronix LA-2A on my bench, and there's a funny thing going on with the T4b. When you touch it or move it around a little bit there's what sounds like a bad connection, and it distorts pretty badly, however it still seems to be reducing gain as it should. The problem follows the T4b when swapped into my own LA-2A, and my friend's LA-2A works fine with a different T4b, so I think it's safe to say that the T4b is the problem.

So my question is: how can a T4b fail? I've mostly heard about the EL panel going dim and the unit not compressing, but that's not what's going here. Might it be some sort of short in one of the photocells?

Thanks,
Paul

get it running in a dark room. See if there's anything wonky.
Shine a lantern on it.

Is this one of the old T4B with the capacitor? check the cap.

As for the touching and getting noises, not sure :S

can the LDR's fail?

If you need replacement LDR Frank (electrochronic) can get ¥ou a matched pair
